Get better Linux help with a better question
Turn “it doesn’t work” into a problem someone can actually help solve.
MuffinMan editorial · November 6, 2026
Describe the goal
Start with what you were trying to do, what happened instead, and whether it ever worked. Include the application name and relevant version.
Make it repeatable
Write the smallest set of steps that reproduces the problem. Include the exact error as text when possible. Mention recent updates or hardware changes without assuming they caused the issue.
Keep private information private
Review logs before posting. Remove passwords, API keys, email addresses, and other sensitive details. Do not run unfamiliar privileged commands just because someone suggested them.
Close the loop
When the issue is fixed, post the solution and explain which change helped. That small follow-up becomes searchable help for the next person.
