Flatpak permissions, without the mystery

Why an app may not see a folder—and why granting everything is not the answer.

MuffinMan editorial · November 6, 2026

Apps have boundaries

Flatpak runs applications in a sandbox. Access to files, devices, and services depends on the application’s permissions and the features it uses. A missing folder can be a permissions issue rather than a broken installation.

Try the file picker first

Portals allow applications to request access through system interfaces such as a file chooser. Use the application’s normal open or import workflow before changing broad permissions.

Choose the smallest change

If access still fails, check the app’s documented requirements and its existing permissions. Grant only what the task needs. Avoid giving an application access to your entire home folder just to solve a single-folder problem. Note changes so you can reverse them.
