A system snapshot is not your photo backup

Build a recovery plan that protects both your setup and your personal files.

MuffinMan editorial · November 6, 2026

Two jobs, two safeguards

Timeshift is intended for system recovery. Personal files are excluded by default. A snapshot that helps undo a system update should not be your only plan for documents, photos, or game saves.

Protect personal files separately

Keep a separate backup of files you cannot replace. Store a copy away from the computer, and test restoring a small folder. Synchronization alone may also synchronize accidental deletion.

Practice recovery

Know where your backups live and how to access them if the main system cannot boot. Before a major update, confirm a recent recovery point and a separate file backup exist.
